Spearfish Canyon is one of the most scenic areas in South Dakota, offering towering limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. Here’s how to make the most of your visit:
Best Time to Visit: While beautiful year-round, fall is especially stunning with golden aspen leaves lining the canyon. The summer tends to be busier with tourists, so just be prepared to take your time driving through.
Must-See Stops:
Bridal Veil Falls – An easily accessible waterfall right off the main road.
Roughlock Falls – A short, scenic hike leads to this multi-tiered waterfall. There is also a parking lot at the top of the falls, so you can get the views without the hike.
Devil’s Bathtub – A moderate hike with creek crossings leading to a natural swimming hole.
Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for deer, turkeys, mountain goats, and eagles. Occasionally you'll have mountain goats stopping traffic!
Outdoor Activities: Hiking, rock climbing, and biking are all popular in the canyon.
Photography Tips: Sunrise and sunset offer the best lighting for capturing the canyon’s dramatic landscapes.
All of our properties are a quick drive to the start of the canyon and make a great home base as you get out and explore this beautiful area!
