A Local's Guide to Spearfish Canyon

Spearfish Canyon is one of the most scenic areas in South Dakota, offering towering limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. Here’s how to make the most of your visit:

• Best Time to Visit: While beautiful year-round, fall is especially stunning with golden aspen leaves lining the canyon. The summer tends to be busier with tourists, so just be prepared to take your time driving through.

• Must-See Stops:

  • Bridal Veil Falls – An easily accessible waterfall right off the main road.

  • Roughlock Falls – A short, scenic hike leads to this multi-tiered waterfall. There is also a parking lot at the top of the falls, so you can get the views without the hike.

  • Devil’s Bathtub – A moderate hike with creek crossings leading to a natural swimming hole.

• Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for deer, turkeys, mountain goats, and eagles. Occasionally you'll have mountain goats stopping traffic!

• Outdoor Activities: Hiking, rock climbing, and biking are all popular in the canyon.
